A study published in the journal The Lancet stated that more than 75% of individuals in India have uncontrolled hypertension.

Patients are considered to have controlled hypertension if their systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements are less than 140 mmHg.

The Lancet Regional Health-Southeast Asia study evaluated the BP control rates between 2001 and 2022 in India. Despite government initiatives, increased knowledge, and easier access to medical services, the proportion of patients with hypertension under control has only increased from 6% to 23% over the past 21 years.

Experts state that hypertension is one of the primary risk factors for cardiovascular illnesses, affecting at least one in four persons in India (CVD). In India, CVDs account for one-third of all fatalities, with adults being affected the most.

A total of 3.4 lakh patients were enrolled in 51 research studies. Of them, 21 studies (41%) revealed lower BP control rates in men than in women, while six (12%) revealed lower rates in patients from rural areas. In India, the overall control rate increased significantly over the years, rising to 23% in 2016–20 from 18% in 2001–20. The study showed substantially worse control rates among males and significantly better control rates in the south and west. The researchers noted that very few studies included information on lifestyle-related social determinants or risk factors.

While India′s hypertension control rates have increased over time, Shaffi Fazaludeen Koya, the study′s co-author said the country still has a significant problem with undiagnosed and uncontrolled blood pressure.
